Dear people of God, “For God alone my soul in silence waits; truly my hope is in Him. He alone is my rock and my salvation, my stronghold, so that I shall not be shaken.” (Psalm 62:6-7) “It’s been a quiet week in Lake Woebegon…” Fans of the long-running radio program “A Prairie Home Companion” will recognize the invariable opening of Garrison Keillor’s weekly monologue about life in his mythical Minnesota home town. Listeners quickly learned that every week was a “quiet” week in Lake Woebegon. That did not mean it was uneventful, and certainly not inconsequential. Life happened in the daily activities of the community’s members and in their interactions with one another; and every single week, Keillor managed to weave together stories of the ordinary in a way that revealed the value and the significance of what we might consider “the everyday.” It’s a quiet season at St. Mark. Christmas has faded in the rear-view mirror. Lent is on the way, but not here quite yet. We continue to be cautious about the spread of the COVID-19 virus even as we anticipate more and more people receiving the vaccine and resuming a more “normal” schedule of activities. In the meantime we wait, and we trust the Lord to be at work in us and amongst us causing us to grow in faith, hope, and love. The Church has entered into a brief season of “ordinary” time after the cycle of Advent-Christmas-Epiphany. This year there are four “green Sundays” before the Epiphany season ends with Transfiguration Sunday (and Mardi Gras!) Lent begins with Ash Wednesday on February 17th. As of now, the plan is to observe Ash Wednesday along with St. Luke’s, Cuyahoga Falls, “Together, but Separate.” It will be rather different from other years (you should be used to that qualifying phrase by now) but we are aiming for a 12 noon worship service here at St. Mark and a 7 p.m. service at St. Luke’s. I will have more details in the next letter, as well as something about a midweek Lenten “gathering” (Spoiler: Don’t count on soup, salad, and dessert on Wednesday evening unless you make it yourself. L ) At our January meeting, the St. Mark church council voted to postpone the annual congregational meeting, which in the ordinary course of things would have taken place on Sunday, February 28. The new meeting date will be Sunday, April 25. Our hope is that many of our members, particularly those at greatest risk from COVID-19, will have received the vaccine and be able to participate in person. (A “virtual” meeting that would satisfy constitutional and legal requirements would be challenging, to say the least.) It seems worth noting, by the way, that April 25 in the calendar of the Church is the feast day of St. Mark the Evangelist! The Building Accessibility Task (BAT Force) held a productive meeting earlier this month. It was decided to authorize officially “stamped” architectural drawings of a new, accessible entryway and of an additional ADA-compliant bathroom. When these are completed, construction bids will be sought; and when we have some estimates, the congregation will be asked to decide how best to proceed with building modifications. The following members, friends, and family were in our prayers as of last Sunday: Dorothy Arbour, Juli Carlson, Ashley Davis, Dick Foss, Steve Fry, Doug and Pat Gardner, Bill George, Jen and Jasmine Lamey, Richard Mattson, Nile Whitsett, and Lori Wright. Please also remember the folks who reside in an Assisted Living or Skilled Nursing Facility and have been “locked down” for these many months: Jane Baddorf, Wenda Count-Drach, Betty Keller, Lois Kost, Marilyn LeMasters, Lois Lytton, Cathy Lundstrom, Lew Meeker, June Mutersbaugh, Lyle Shaffstall, and Nancy Yoho. May the Lord enable and empower our everyday acts of love and service as we wait on Him, and may He hasten the days until we can gather together safely in one place again. Pastor Deborah Wissner Sunday School will take place during part of the church service until further notice.
